How to Search for Cancelled or Expired US Trademarks

If you want to search for cancelled or expired US trademarks, follow these steps:

1. Visit the USPTO Website

  • Go to the official website of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO): www.uspto.gov.

2. Use the TESS System

  • On the USPTO homepage, navigate to the "Trademarks" section and click on "Searching Trademarks."

  • Select the TESS (Trademark Electronic Search System) to begin your search.

3. Search for the Trademark

  • In TESS, choose either the Basic Word Mark Search (New User) or Word and/or Design Mark Search (Structured) option.

  • Enter the trademark name or registration number and click "Submit Query" to view the results.

4. Check the Trademark Status

In the search results, click on the trademark name to see detailed information.

  • Look for the "Status" or "Current Status" field to determine if the trademark is cancelled, expired, or inactive.


  • 5. Use the TSDR System

  • For more detailed information, use the TSDR (Trademark Status and Document Retrieval) system.

  • Enter the trademark serial number or registration number to access its full history and status.
